This month, we have the privilege of celebrating the resurrection of the Lord. It is a joyous celebration because of its basis. Ephesians 2:1 says that man’s condition is that of being “dead in trespasses and sins.” We stand under the condemnation of God because of our sin. From Genesis to Revelation, sin pronounces a death sentence upon man, both physical death, and spiritual death in hell. Man stands in need of the grace and mercy of God. Jesus came into this world to die for sinners, and thereby provide a way of peace with God. His death was a sacrifice to God. Was His death enough? Is there ever a sacrifice made to God which is not acceptable? We see evidence of unacceptable sacrifices many times in Scripture. Cain brought a sacrifice of his garden instead of the sacrifice that God demanded, so it was unacceptable. Nadab and Abihu brought incense into the Tabernacle, but it was “strange fire,” not the incense that the Lord commanded to be brought. They were instantly killed by God. Saul intruded into the office of Samuel and offered a sacrifice so that the troops could get on with the battle. His sacrifice was not acceptable. What proof do we have that the sacrifice of Jesus was acceptable to God as atonement for our sins? The resurrection proved this incredible truth. Death could not hold Him, for He was sinless, not under the curse of death. His sacrifice was acceptable because it was pure, just what God had demanded. Romans 5:10 says, “For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.” Have you been reconciled to God, or do you still stand as an enemy? Any sacrifice that you can bring to God is not acceptable to Him. It is strange fire because of your sin. You can have peace with God through the blood of His cross (Colossians 1:20). Its efficacy has been demonstrated in the resurrection.
