In this series of devotionals, our goal is to know God better. Proverbs 9:10 says, “the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” No matter how deep our knowledge of God, He is infinitely deeper. An eternity of growing understanding of God will not be sufficient to comprehend Him.
No matter how vast your intelligence is, there are many things that you are ignorant of. Go to the beach and grab a handful of sand. No matter how much you are able to grab, you will leave behind more than you hold. Our intellectual capacity is limited; God knows everything. He knows everything perfectly, instantly and simultaneously. God does not learn. He does not get His information by sending angels out to gather information (Romans 11:33-36). Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.”
Limited knowledge and understanding brings us to the place of frustration. We are crushed by the overwhelming question of “why?”. Not knowing what tomorrow will bring chokes us with anxiety and fear of what might be. We fear because we don’t know what to do. For centuries, our limited ability to grasp the fullness of what it means that God is sovereign has left us frustrated and seething in controversy. We are limited and finite, and thus, prone to frustration. God is limitless and infinite; He cannot be frustrated or anxious.
In Mark 7, Jesus healed a deaf man, leaving the onlookers “astonished beyond measure.” They said in Mark 7:37, “He has done all things well.” This is a vivid statement of everything that He has done and is doing. No matter how catastrophic your failures may be, God knows your life perfectly. The depth of your failure will never leave Him unsure of what to do. He does all things well.
