One of the great problems that is overwhelmingly apparent today is that we don’t think rightly about God. Our thoughts of God are few, and when we think about God, our thoughts are small and insufficient (at best). There is little sense of overwhelming majesty and awe. In our age of incessant activity and talking and noise, we have completely neglected the command of Psalm 46:10. “Be still, and know that I am God.”
What comes to your mind when you think about God? Do you just have a mental image or do your thoughts extend to what is true about Him? When Moses asked to see the glory of God, God revealed who He was to Moses. Especially in this regard, what we believe determines how we behave. What we believe about God will have overwhelming results in how we live. Wherever what we believe about God is weak or insufficient, the whole structure of our lives will begin to erode and fall apart. Though we may not craft an idol of wood or metal to worship, countless people today have crafted an idol of thoughts and notions of what they want God to be instead of who He has revealed Himself to be. In John 1:1, the Bible says that Jesus is the Word. This title has the idea of propositional truth, that by which God communicates His mind to us. Hebrews 1:2 says that Jesus is the full and final revelation of God to us. What I need to know about God has been revealed in the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
In the next several devotionals, we are going to consider who God is. If we will ever think rightly about God, we must understand that He is not “like” anyone or anything else. In Psalm 50:21, God rebukes us for thinking that He is like us. This is the idea that is described when we say that God is “holy.” He is separate, unique. The first step on the path to spiritual decline is surrendering our high concept of God, losing the experience of the awe of God. When Proverbs 9:10 says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, it means that when we lose this awe of God that overwhelms us on every level, we cannot think or act correctly in any sphere of life.
